Feb 12 - Wacky Words!

Let's discuss Wacky Words! What words do you find difficult to articulate? What words are fun to say because they sound funny or feel funny to pronounce? Are there any pronunciations of words that drive you CRAZY? I love to say the words "nonchalant," "flabbergasted," and "fervor." It bothers me when people say "melk" instead of "milk," and for some reason when they do not pronounce the "t" in "often." What about you?

  1. I use the word pretentious a lot, which that itself I find incredibly pretentious, and that's why I love it. Another favorite of mine would be flamboyant. I think that when you say "flamboyant" you sort of feel flamboyant. But maybe that's just me. I hate when people say "bolth" instead of "both," though I have probably done it once or twice. I also like words that look simple but are sort of hard to say. An example would be "statistical." Ask my friends, I have this weird thing about certain words. Some words make me cringe when I hear them. These words include: cream, nugget, curdle, moist, and cracker.
I'm not really sure why I can't stand those words, but I hate them. HATE THEM.

  2. I have a tendency to mispronounce a lot of words, especially ones I see in text but have never heard spoken aloud. However, I do this so often I can't recall any specific examples, nor any words I use on a regular basis because I like them. However, the most memorable instance would be in chemistry when I mispronounced the element "barium." It's really pronounced BEAR-ee-um, but I said it BAR-ee-um. To this day, my fellow chemistry students and Mr. Mulroy say it wrong on purpose to remind me of my goof-up. There are a lot of scientific terms that are fun to say, I guess i.e. supernova. I also remember back in 5th grade I mispronounced lobotomy and said LOW-buh-toe-mee. Also, I substitute "uber" for "super" alot, and I learned recently that it's actually German for super.

  3. I love the word "gratuitous". I can never quite nail down it's spelling, but I almost never hear it used from anyone other than myself. I'd have to say my least favorite word is "literally", because for some reason it sounds annoying to me and it is literally overused. From what I hear and read, literally 90% of cool words are either in German or Russian.

Flugrekorder is a fun German word to say, it means flight recorder. I was quite surprised to learn that very little of the English language has been influenced by Russian, but Spetsnaz (the name of Russian military Special Forces) is a fun word from the land of the dirty Communists.

  4. I actually pronounce a lot of words weird. Not exactly wrong, just different than most people. For instance, I love the word "cute," but I say it EXTREMELY weird. Seriously is one of my favorite words, too. And okay, I like how the word "slaughter" sounds, but I swear I'm not a crazy killer or anything! I agree with you Mrs. Stallman, when people say "melk" I want to scream! Same with "pellow"--where are these people getting the "e" instead of the "i"?! Also, the word “apricot” really makes me cringe. I love examining all the crazy different words in our language.

  5. Kurt - you used the word "gratuitous" in your vocabulary sentences this week, and I adored you for it! Also, if you had left your comment unsigned, I would have, once again, known it was you...Michele, remind me to ask you to say "cute" for us! Emily, I am with you on "curdle" because it makes me think of curdled milk (not "melk").

  7. I like the word diabolic which means outrageously wicked! This reminds me of when I was in Boston to visit my family over thanksgiving break. Their favorite word to say was wicked. Their wicked was like our cool or awesome. Another word that I like is nocturnal! I just like to say it because it is a really cool sounding word. I like the word swindle which means cheat out of money or assets I think that’s cool. My final and favorite word of all time and all time coolest word ever is smorgasbord! It is the funniest word ever!

  9. Even though I’ve been absent for the last two days, which really sucks, because I really do hate missing school, I hate being behind. Anyways I’ve been reading the daily drama and I’m sad I missed the POL and wacky words things. Congratulations Kyle and Mario!!!! Anyways I can’t recall any words I really do like or particularly use a lot, but there are a few I dislike. For instance I hate the word “delicious” I couldn’t tell you why it just sounds gross to me when people say it. I have to admit I am one of those people who say words wrong, like milk and pillow and elbow. Yes elbow, I catch myself saying “albow” all the time. Some words that I do like are shenanigans, nice, crisp and whippersnapper. They’re fun to say. The word nice just rolls off your tongue.

When people say "melk" instead of milk it really doesnt drive me crazy, it does bug me on some days but not to often.Other than that there is not to many words i do not like when people miss use them.

  11. It really bothers me when people consistantly use obviously improper grammer, i.e. "I seen it." It baffles me how many people do that.
While in general I think that I pronounce words correctly, there are a few that I frequently have trouble with. One of these words is "pomegranate," which I pronounce as "pomegramite." I also used to have a problem saying "Afghanistan." It ususally sounded like "Afanaghanistan," but it varied.
I do not currently have a favorite word.

  12. I also do not care for the term "bucks" used in reference to currency and not animals.
When people say the word "gay" and mean ridiculous or stupid, it really annoys me.

  13. The word I find hard to says is malevolent. I really couldn't tell you why I have a hard time with it, I just do. It's kind of embarrasing. My favorite word to say is pinacle. It is such a clean cut pretty word. I hate when people say "agg" instead of "egg". AKA my mother.

  14. I love the word copious. i dont know why but learned it in 11th grade c.p with mr vass. IT really angers me when people add a N in preztal and say pellow. GOSH DANGIT

  15. There are a few words that I don't like it when people say them wrong, like when people say whipped with an h sound before it. I can't stand it when people say "pellow" instead of "pillow", some of my friends say that and it drives me crazy. I don't really have any words that bother me, but there are words that I enjoy saying. Like Ms. Stallman I enjoy to say the word nonchalant, I also like to say the concur, as in "I concur".

  16. Well im going to have to say that i thoroughly enjoy sayiong the words wasps. It just seems to roll off the tongue in a amusing way. i absolutly hate when people pronounce the word wash right. When they say "Worsh" it drives me up a wall. Also i hate when my cousin says " i seen that". Every time i tell him that its saw not seen but he doesn't listen. Lastly, I hate when people try to act "ghetto" and they dont annunciate any of their words. Especially if they are white i hate it.

  17. I like to say the word preposterous. It is fun to articulate. I also enjoy the word meticulous. My friends make fun of me for using it. I hate it when people say the word "gater" instead of "gator". Besides that, I am pretty okay with words that people use.

  18. Words that I find "wacky" are words that i can't pronounce or try to pronounce and fail. These words usually come from shakespear or other old english authors that use big words that are pronouned weird. i also find that chemicals and medicens are spelled and pronounced funny. examples are "phlegm", "philiac", and "scrofulous" Kyle

  19. There really aren't any "wacky" words that I can't pronounce. Like Kyle said, most of the words from shakespear do mess me up, though. I can't really think of any off the top of my head that really bother me, though.
